“Frente ala ría de Mundaka, paraíso de los sufistas y nadadores temerarios, se resguarda una casa con galería y jardín construida a principios de siglo por al arquitecto Marcelino Arrupe, padre del fue superior general de los jesuitas, Pedro Arrupe.
Transformada en un hotelito familiar, decorado con cierto estilo ingles, pulcrísimo, constituye hoy por hoy el mejor alojamiento de la costa vizcaína.
Al entrar, siempre reciben Mari Carmen Alonso o su marido José Ignacio Alkorta. Ambos son un perfecto ejemplo de franqueza y hospitalidad vascas. El vestíbulo se encuentra en la parte trasera de la casa, todo aroma de pan fresco y mermeladas.
Las habitaciones son coquetas, prodigas a los buenos detalles. Tras los cristales se vislumbra la silueta oscura de la iglesia y el mar cantábrico en la desembocadura de la ría. Un paisaje para los que saben apreciar los latidos del silencio y el perfume del hogar.
Algunas noches templadas de verano, la propiedad tiene el detalle de servir para todos los huéspedes un excelente marmitako asambleario bajo el emparrado. El salitre hace lo demás.”

The house speaks of the optimism of the early years of the century; it is open, galleried frontage lets in the ever changing ligth and lets you contemplate sand, sea and adjacent church tower of Santa Maria. The owners – kind straightforward folkcare deeply for their hotel; you will probably meet them when you arrive and they will find time to help your plan visits.
We would choose a room with sea view, but they are all worth a nigth; medium.sized, carpeted and with modern prints, they are spik-and span, quiet and confortable- and have more gadgets than you need, plus king-size beds. Atalaya would be a marvellous place to spent the last night before the ferri ( car and belongings safe in their free car park ); there are meals on offer in a recently opened restaurant or there are good restaurants within walking distance.”

“Opposite the Mundaka estuary, a paradise for surfers and adventurous swimmers, nestles a house with a gallery and garden built at the beginning of the century by architect Marcelino Arrupe, the father of Pedro Arrupe, the 28th general of the Society of Jesus.
Transformed into a family hotel and decorated in an immaculately English style, the hotel today offers the very best accommodation on the Biscay coast.
On arrival, you are always met by Mari Carmen Alonso or her husband, José Ignacio Alkorta. Both of them are a perfect example of Basque openness and hospitality. The hall is at the back of the house and scented with the aroma of freshly-baked bread and jam.
